The C9300X-48HXN-E is a Cisco Catalyst 9300X Series access switch for closets where Layer 2 switching and OSPF routing on Network Essentials cover the needs of the floor. Forty of its 48 UPOE+ ports run at up to 5G and eight reach 10G, the default 1100W supply provides a 690W PoE budget, and the switch adds a modular uplink slot and 960 Gbps of switching capacity. The eight-port uplink modules run six usable ports on this chassis, and the four-port 100G module does not fit.

Eight 10G Ports Among Forty 5G Ports

The faster ports are limited to eight: they negotiate 10G, 5G, 2.5G, 1G or 100M, while the other 40 stop at 5G. Cabling decides what each run can reach. Cat6 carries 10G for 55 m and Cat6A for the full 100 m, and above 2.5G a Cat5e run is not guaranteed to 100 m.

PoE+ And UPOE Loads On The Default Supply

With only the default 1100W supply installed, 690W is available for PoE. That powers 23 devices at 30W or eleven at 60W. The second 1100W supply that the configurator adds raises the budget to 1790W, which covers 30W on all 48 ports.

Room For 90W Devices With Larger Supplies

Every port is UPOE+ and can deliver up to 90W to IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 devices. Two 1900W supplies on 230V input raise the budget to 3390W, which still covers 37 ports at 90W rather than all 48.

Six Usable Ports On Eight-Port Modules

Uplink capacity on this chassis is lower than the module label suggests. C9300X-NM-8M and C9300X-NM-8Y each run ports 1 to 6 here, with ports 7 and 8 permanently disabled; C9300X-NM-2C keeps both 100G ports, breakout only on port 1, and C9300X-NM-4C is not supported.

Routing Within Network Essentials

Network Essentials routes with RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF up to 1,000 routes, and adds PBR, VRRP and private VLANs. Access security comes from 802.1X and MACsec-128, and model-driven telemetry, sampled NetFlow and SPAN stay available on this tier.

Stack Of Eight At 1 Tbps

C9300X-48HXN-E and C9300X-48HX-E share UPOE+ on all 48 ports, but the C9300X-48HXN-E reaches 10G on only eight of them and runs the other 40 at up to 5G. A floor that needs 10G on every port moves to C9300X-48HX-E, which also switches 1,760 Gbps against 960 Gbps. BGP, VXLAN, MPLS, MACsec-256 or hardware IPsec on day one requires C9300X-48HXN-A. An installed switch upgrades instead through a C9300-LIC= term (C9300-48-E-A-3, -5 or -7), bought separately from the hardware order. C9300-48UXM-E is the non-X option, with 60W Cisco UPOE, 12 10G ports, a 490W default budget, StackWise-480 and 580 Gbps.

Ordering Checklist

Subscription tier: Order a 48-port Essentials term such as C9300-DNA-E-48-5Y for Cisco DNA or C9300-DNX-E-48-5Y for Cisco Catalyst. The configurator defaults to Cisco DNA Advantage for 5 years, which does not match a Network Essentials switch.
Uplink module: The configurator adds C9300X-NM-2C; keep it, change it to C9300X-NM-8M or C9300X-NM-8Y, or select C9300X-NM-NONE. C9300X-NM-4C does not fit this switch, and a slot left empty needs a blank.
Second power supply: A second PWR-C1-1100WAC-P is selected by default and C9300-SPS-NONE removes it. Without it the PoE budget stays at 690W instead of 1790W.
Stack cables: A 3 m StackWise cable and a 150 cm StackPower cable come with each switch unless C9300X-STACK-NONE and C9300-SPWR-NONE are selected. Unstacked switches otherwise arrive with cables they do not use.
