The C9300X-48HX-E is a Cisco Catalyst 9300X Series stackable access switch for campus closets that pair 90W endpoints with Layer 2 and OSPF routed access. Under Network Essentials, the switch drives 48 Cisco UPOE+ ports at up to 10G Multigigabit from a 590W PoE budget on its default 1100W supply, and it adds a modular uplink slot and 1,760 Gbps of switching capacity. The Essentials tier caps OSPF at 1,000 routes and encrypts links with MACsec-128, while BGP, VXLAN and MPLS sit in Network Advantage.

PoE Budget On One Or Two Supplies

The default 1100W supply leaves 590W for PoE, which covers nine ports at 60W or 19 at 30W. A second 1100W supply lifts the pool to 1690W: 28 ports at 60W, or all 48 at 30W with 250W left over.

Layer 3 Inside Network Essentials

Routed access runs on RIP, EIGRP Stub and OSPF, with OSPF holding up to 1,000 routes. The tier also brings PBR, VRRP, private VLANs, 802.1X and MACsec-128, and both tiers include model-driven telemetry, sampled NetFlow and SPAN.

Four C9300X Uplink Modules

The slot accepts eight 10G Multigigabit copper ports on C9300X-NM-8M, eight 25G/10G/1G SFP ports on C9300X-NM-8Y, or two or four 100G/40G QSFP ports on C9300X-NM-2C and C9300X-NM-4C. Only three Catalyst 9300X models take the four-port 100G module, this chassis among them, and that module needs Cisco IOS XE 17.6.1 or later.

Matching License Levels In A Stack

Up to eight Catalyst 9300X switches stack at 1 Tbps on StackWise-1T, and every member must run the same license level. StackPower+ pools supply capacity across four switches per ring, or eight when an XPS-2200 is added.

IPsec Hardware Under The Advantage Tier

The UADP 2.0sec ASIC encrypts IPsec at up to 100G with AES-256 once a separately ordered HSEC key is in place. That feature, like app hosting on the two 10G AppGig ports, belongs to the Cisco Catalyst or Cisco DNA Advantage subscription tier.

Cat5e Runs At 5G

Existing Cat5e cabling carries each port at up to 5G. A 10G port needs Cat6 for runs up to 55 m or Cat6A out to 100 m, and the ports operate in full duplex only.

C9300X-48HX-E is the powered model of a matching pair: C9300X-48TX-E keeps the same 48 10G Multigigabit ports, modular uplink and Network Essentials license but supplies no PoE, which fits closets where no endpoint draws power from the switch. Network Essentials stops being enough once a design needs BGP, VXLAN, MPLS, MACsec-256 or more than 1,000 OSPF routes, and C9300X-48HX-A is the model to order when that need exists on day one. An installed C9300X-48HX-E moves up later with a C9300-LIC= upgrade term, C9300-48-E-A-3, -5 or -7, which cannot be bought on the switch order itself. Closets that need no more than 24 ports can take C9300X-24HX-E, which starts at 735W of PoE but switches 800 Gbps and does not accept C9300X-NM-4C.

Ordering Checklist

  • Subscription tier: Change the configurator default of Cisco DNA Advantage to a 48-port Essentials term of 3, 5 or 7 years, such as C9300-DNA-E-48-5Y or C9300-DNX-E-48-5Y. New orders need a subscription at the same tier as the Network Essentials license.
  • Uplink module: C9300X-NM-2C is added by default; keep it, change it to C9300X-NM-4C, C9300X-NM-8M or C9300X-NM-8Y, or select C9300X-NM-NONE. The switch runs only with a module or a blank in the slot.
  • Second power supply: The configurator selects a second PWR-C1-1100WAC-P, and C9300-SPS-NONE removes it. Without the second supply the PoE budget stays at 590W rather than 1690W.
  • Stack cables: Each switch defaults to a 3 m StackWise cable and a 150 cm StackPower cable. Select C9300X-STACK-NONE and C9300-SPWR-NONE for switches that will run standalone.
  • Power cords: Pick the cord type for the installation country, because the configurator otherwise supplies North American cords.

    C9300X-48HX-E runs 128-bit MACsec under Network Essentials. The 256-bit mode requires Network Advantage, so it stays unavailable on this license tier until the license is upgraded. The same hardware runs both key lengths, and the license decides which one is enabled.

  • Is xFSU available on C9300X-48HX-E?

    No. Extended fast software upgrade (xFSU) is listed under Network Advantage, together with NSF and graceful insertion and removal (GIR).
